A Black Man’s Journey

-Character of Mel King

About The Book

Uncommon Vol. 1

The book is about the life of a young man, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles. Despite many factors that were against him, such as gang wars that were commonplace in his community, father disappeared when he entered high school, and the family was continually financially lacking for basic needs.

In spite of these odds against him, Mel continued to demonstrate an excellent spirit that was readily discernable to persons in authority and trusted him with responsibility uncommon for someone his age. When Mel’s father disappeared, and the family had limited resource choices, Mel knew he had to do something different that no one else in his family had done. . . Get a degree. And, Mel knew the family could not afford to send him to school, so he chose to enter the Air Force to obtain assistance for schooling through the G.I. Bill. While in high school, where Mel’s spirit of excellence was recognized by a teacher, he coached Mel to an elected office in the school. It was no different in Mel’s first assignment in the Air Force. His attention to detail was observed and he was given the opportunity to perform and hold positions several grades above his rank.

Mel’s first assignment, often had himself and another airman supervising airmen 2 – 3 grades above ourselves. He was tasked to train a sergeant to head his department since a sergeant was minimum paygrade to do so. After 10 months received orders for Thailand. While there, was recognized as “Airman of the Month,” and then selected to represent the base as “Airman of the Year,” at a competition held in the Philippines. He was unable to compete as he received orders to attend the Academy Prep School. Unbeknownst to him, the 1st sergeant at his first assignment submitted his name because of his entrance scores for the Air Force. After a year with the Prep School, he entered the Air Force Academy. It wasn’t long after arriving at the Academy that he submitted his resignation. Normally, when a cadet submits a resignation, they see a colonel and are processed out that same week.  Not so with him. He saw the Commandant of Cadets, a general. He rejected his resignation, (He found out later – only the second time in the Academy’s history) but gave him 45 days to reconsider. At the end of 45 days, he saw the general again and the General signed the papers.

He had nine months remaining of his enlistment term so he was given orders to report to an Air Force base in New Jersey. Once again, he took over a department that was previously ran by a sergeant three paygrades above him. This went so well that the squadron commander asked if he could send him to Officer Candidate School (OCS). Once again, Mel turned down an opportunity, as an enlisted person, to become an officer because he did not want the service as a career. General Olds, in one of Mel’s exit interviews from the Academy, said, “The service does and has recognized your innate leadership; which, may not necessarily be so in the civilian sector where politics and envy can come into play; and is more decisive.” When Mel entered the civilian sector, these words rang true many times.

About The Author

Mel King

A person of color, demonstrating excellent performance from high school, the Air Force, and ultimately in corporate America. In high school, he participated and lettered in swimming and football, wrote for the school newspaper, held an elected office, and made the Honor Roll. The impetus for these achievements can be traced back to an Industrial Arts teacher, a Mr. Alvin Hayes, who took an interest in Mel, thought he was Uncommon, and suggested that he participate in one of the school’s council positions. Unfortunately, this had been the one and only person who ever actively mentored Mel. Because his father became missing his sophomore year in high school, he had to work at night to help with the household and provide for his own needs. Mel was demonstrating what a person, regardless of color, can do with a positive attitude, a willingness to succeed, and, recognize that a negative environment does not have to defeat you.

Uncommon – A Black Man’s Journey is the first of three books, and I believe my story is very apropos in light of three social norms of today. There is first of all, the emphasis on racial justice. The movie, Hidden Figures was about a group of ladies who helped America put a man into space and orbit our planet by the ability to perform calculations that computers do today. Unfortunately, at the time, they received very little recognition for their effort. I entered the corporate world just six years after this depiction and you can imagine there would have been very little change in societies attitude toward black individuals.

Secondly, If you have seen the mini-series, “Roots,” by Alex Haley, I believe my story is a modern day parallel of Roots. I had to face similar hardships, prejudices, and ignorant behavior, just because I am a person of color.

Thirdly, and once again looking at the norms of our society, people are being chosen for positions, not because they are capable, have experience, or their intelligence, but on some arbitrary criteria such as being female, black, gay, lesbian, etc. That was not so with me.  I routinely was put into positions because of my ability, yet, I receive no or very little recognition or reward for my effort (a hidden figure). Those of us who are Black are very offended when we see another person of color selected for a position, not because they have the experience but only because they are black.

Beyond the humor, King’s writing style is refreshingly lucid and conversational, akin to engaging in an enlightening chat with a close friend.
